Safety Tips
The Florida Department of Transportation urges pedestrians and bicyclists to use caution to help prevent accidents.
- Never assume you have the right-of-way.
- Follow the rules of the road when bicycling. This includes using hand signals and obeying traffic signs.
- Look both ways before crossing any road…and keep looking while you cross.
- Look for vehicles turning onto cross street or into/out of driveways.
- Use crosswalks whenever possible…do not jay walk.
- When approaching a crosswalk, do not enter the crosswalk if the pedestrian signal is yellow.
- Be alert and aware of your surroundings! Do not give all of your attention to talking on your cell phone, texting or your headphones.
- Wear light-colored or reflective clothing when walking during low light – early morning, dusk, evening, poor weather visibility conditions.
- Where sidewalks are not provided, walk on the shoulder of the road on the left side of the roadway, facing traffic.
